About Us

Hi and thanks for coming to our online all organic shop.

Purpose

We have set out with one main purpose and that is to provide a single source where you can buy food and products with the peace of mind that they do not contain, or are contaminated with, any harmful chemicals.

We want to prevent the possibility of any harmful chemicals being consumed, ingested or absorbed into our bodies.

We want to feel safe in the knowledge that the products we consume (and sell on our website) are produced, or grown, to strict guidelines which prevent the use of artificial chemical fertilisers, growth hormones, unrestricted use of antibiotics and pesticides, which are known to be harmful to human beings.

How it All Began

This all started in 2007 when my mum started to get a reaction from the shampoo and conditioner that she was using. We had heard and knew a little bit about Organic and about harmful artificial chemicals being used in health and beauty products. But what my mum was using could not be the cause of the problem as it had the words Organic and natural in the description - these are good things? aren't they?

More research was needed and I came across some facts, some of which said that "Parabens" was a chemical that, amongst others, may be harmful. A quick check on the ingredients list on the product that my mum used revealed that there was indeed "Parabens" in it.

Here is one of the biggest problems with health and beauty products; there are no laws restricting the use of the word ‘organic' on cosmetics and beauty products. It is only restricted in the realms of food. So shampoos, moisturisers, face creams and a whole host of related products can be called organic without being organic. They can also include an entire range of artificial chemicals, some of which may be harmful.

At the same time as this discovery was made there were some very revealing programmes on the televison concerning food additives, pesticide sprays on fruit and vegetables, chemical fertilisers, antibiotics, growth hormones and other drugs given regularly to farm animals, factory farming and a whole lot of other activities which result in what I call contamination.

What's even more worrying is the "chemical cocktail" effect - this is the unknown result of artificial chemicals from the food we eat and the products that we absorb (from creams, shampoos, cosmetics etc), coming together inside the body and perhaps causing some sort of chemical reaction - we don't know!

So how do we go about buying organic food - well this is another couple months of research and I don't want to bore you with the details, so I have listed the main points:

  1. There are a few organisations in the UK, recognised by the government, that through detailed and very specific "standards" certify all food products including meat, vegetables and fruit, health and beauty products and other goods, as "Organic". The most well known is the Soil Association. They visit and assess growers and farmers through to processors and suppliers and if they do not meet the standards, they can lose their organic certification. Standards include soil, feed, animal welfare and treatment, GM, packing and many more aspects. Visit their website to see more.
  2. If the product does not have an organic certification logo from one of the main licensing bodies in the UK, then you should investigate it more or buy a product that does.
  3. The following descriptions on or about food do NOT mean that it meets the Organic standards in 1.) above: "Natural", "Whole" or "Whole Food"

So we decided that as far as possible, for the sake of our health, we would buy organic products - this was the easy part - or so we thought!

We visited lots of web sites selling Organic products, but we soon became extremely confused and even more frustrated. This is what we found:

Organic Food Websites:

Not everything was certified organic.
Some products were certified by non UK recognised organisations

Organic Health and Beauty websites:

In some cases the choice was overwhelming, but it was difficult to determine exactly what was and wasn't certified organic. Some had hardly any choice.

It was just not practical to buy meat from one place and veg and fruit from another etc.

So we decided to start our own online shop where you could buy a range of organic products and feel safe in the knowledge that every one is certified organic by a government recognised organisation. In addition these organisations actively check compliance with organic standards and will de-list the product / producer if they find non compliance.

Finding and checking the products we have listed has taken several months, but we are now ready. As we progress more products will be added to the range.

More information on Certified organic products is on our "Why Organic" page.
